IV. Technical Requirements

  

A&I Online was designed with minimum technical requirements to ensure that users will not be burdened with downloading the latest browsers and various plug-ins. A&I Online can be viewed on both Netscape and Internet Explorer browsers.

4.1 What is needed to view A&I Online?

There are only four things you need to have to access A&I Online.

  1. A computer with Internet access
  2. An Internet Explorer browser or Netscape browser. We currently ensure that A&I can be accessed and function properly with the two most recent levels of browsers (Internet Explorer 5.5/6.0 and Netscape 6.2/7.0).
  3. Acrobat Reader 4.0 (or greater) is also required to display and print some of the information on A&I Online.
  4. The site address: http://ai.volpe.dot.gov/

The most recent versions of Netscape, Internet Explorer, and Adobe Acrobat can be downloaded now.

4.2 Browser option settings

A&I Online best runs on the default settings of each browser. Therefore, you are not required to change any settings. However, if for some reason these settings have changed they must be reset to the default settings. A&I Online requires the user to maintain the initial options.

1.   Caching/Temporary Internet Files Settings : A&I requires pages on the web site to be refreshed at least once per session. This setting should not be changed on the browser options/preferences to be Never. 

Note: If you are running a version of Internet Explorer, make the following change in Internet Options: Settings->Check for newer versions of stored pages->Every visit to the page

2.  Cookies : A&I Online requires that cookies be enabled on your browser. The cookie preference on the browser should not be changed from the default value that is to accept cookies.

4.3 How to make A&I your start-up page

If you would like to make A&I Online the start-up page in your web browser use the following steps to set the preferences on your browser.

Netscape 6.x Internet Explorer 5.x
  1. Click Edit on the main menu
  2. Select Preferences
  3. Select the Navigator page
  4. In the location field on the Home page type: http://ai.volpe.dot.gov
  5. Click OK
  1. Click Tools on the main menu
  2. Select Internet Options
  3. Select the General tab
  4. In the address field on the Home page type http://ai.volpe.dot.gov
  5. Click OK
